Un animal naturalisé est une figure troublante par bien des aspects, qu’elle prenne la forme d’un trophée de chasse ou d’un spécimen exposé dans un musée. C’est à la fois une preuve de la mort et le déni de cette mort. Car tout l’enjeu de la taxidermie – du grec taxis « ordre, arrangement » et derma « peau » – consiste à préserver la surface organique et à simuler la vitalité de l’animal à travers un jeu de montage. Se trouver en présence d’une naturalisation, c’est faire l’expérience que quelque chose est bien là, sans que l’on ne puisse réellement en déterminer le statut. Est-ce un animal ou un objet ?

Ma résidence artistique au Lieu Unique à Nantes s’est achevée vendredi dernier. Pendant deux semaines j’ai pu expérimenter, lire, chercher, combiner, et écrire. Le tout sans impératif de production ou d’accrochage à l’issue de mon passage. Un temps d’exploration précieux donc que j’ai choisi d’articuler autour du thème de l’animal et de sa forme naturalisée.

A naturalized animal is a disturbing figure in many ways, whether it takes the form of a hunting trophy or a specimen displayed in a museum. It is at the same time a proof of death and the denial of this death. For the whole point of taxidermy – from the Greek taxis “order, arrangement” and derma “skin” – is to preserve the organic surface and simulate the vitality of the animal through crafting. To find oneself in the presence of a naturalization is to experience that something is indeed there, without one being able to really determine its status. Is it an animal or an object?

My artistic residency at Le Lieu Unique in Nantes ended last Friday. For two weeks I was able to experiment, read, research, combine, and write. All this without any obligation to produce a work at the end of my stay. A precious time that I chose to articulate around the theme of the animal and its naturalized form.
